Must reelecition year… oh wait, can illegal aliens vote now??
On Tuesday, the Obama Administration named Andrew Lorenz-Strait the first official taxpayer-funded public advocate for illegal immigrants, the Washington Times reports.
This new position, the Times says, is “charged with listening to immigrants’ concerns about its law enforcement policies,” but GOP lawmakers say the position “amounts to an official mouthpiece for illegal immigrants being deported.”
Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX), who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, called the appointment “outrageous.”
“It’s outrageous that the Obama administration has appointed a taxpayer-funded activist for illegal and criminal immigrants who are detained or ordered deported. The administration all too often acts more like a lobbying firm for illegal immigrants than as an advocate for the American people,” he said.
Rep. Steve King (R-IA) said the Administration “continues to ignore the Rule of Law, which begs the question; where is the Rule of Law Czar?”
“President Obama refuses to enforce immigration law, sues the states that do so and now he’s appointed a czar for illegal immigrants. The president is making a conscious decision to evade Congress in order to appease his base,” he said.
The Times added:
Mr. Smith said that when Congress created the Homeland Security Department, it specifically created an advocate’s position for those in the legal immigration process, but it declined to create one for illegal immigrants, who the courts have regularly ruled are not entitled to the same protections as citizens and legal residents.
Even as it has set a record for deportations, the Obama administration has taken steps to try to give illegal immigrants more rights within the deportation system and has instructed prosecutors to drop cases against many of those detained as illegal immigrants.
Jim Hoft of the Gateway Pundit noted:
This Administration may have a record number of deportations but they have issued a record number of “U” Visas to illegal immigrants. These visas provide illegals a path to legal and permanent residency. U Visa holders also receive all benefits and protections normally available to refugees (including Refugee Cash and Medical Assistance, Federally-Funded Public Benefits, and Individual Development Accounts).
The appointment is also not sitting well with the National Border Patrol Council, a union that represents 17,000 Border Patrol agents.
On Wednesday, the union said that the new position “makes a ‘mockery’ of the laws of the United States.
“The Obama administration took its next step toward amnesty for illegal aliens by naming an advocate for illegal aliens and those concerned about immigration issues,” said Shawn P. Moran, vice president of the union.
Saying that “amnesty is not the answer,” Moran asked: “What is next? Will drug dealers band together decrying their prosecutions in one voice?”
“Will these unlicensed pharmacists be given an advocate and the DEA ordered to release these criminals?”
The Administration claims it is trying to focus its limited resources on criminals and repeat offenders, but Moran said Lorenz-Strait might as well be named the “amnesty czar,” since in his view, amnesty appears to be the “ultimate goal of an administration used to employing smoke and mirrors in an attempt to appear tough on immigration.”
